NEWS RELEASE
TBF, FLW ANNOUNCE 2018 HIGH SCHOOL FISHING SCHEDULE MINNEAPOLIS (Nov. 9, 2017) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) and The Bass Federation (TBF) announced Thursday the 2018 High School Fishing schedule, including 29 Student Angler Federation (SAF) High School Fishing State Championships, 24 Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Fishing Opens, seven state high school athletic association sanctioned tournaments and three SAF High School Fishing Challenge tournaments, plus the most anticipated events of the year, the High School Fishing National Championship and World Finals on Pickwick Lake in Florence, Alabama. “High School Fishing is the perfect recruitment, retention and reactivation program,” said FLW President of Operations Kathy Fennel. “Since its introduction in 2010 with the inaugural High School Fishing World Finals, we’ve seen how effective it is at getting new anglers and lapsed anglers on the water while retaining existing anglers who often serve as mentors for school teams. You need to look no further than the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2016 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation that shows an 8 percent increase in fishing participation since 2011 to see the program’s effectiveness. While several factors undoubtedly play into this growth, High School Fishing is certainly a leading contributor. We are creating a whole new generation of anglers and providing them with a connection to their schools and the outdoors.” The more than 20,000 anglers that participated in the TBF/FLW High School Fishing program this year will have 72 tournaments in which to compete in 2018. “As the sport’s leading youth organization, we are proud to have FLW as our partner in providing more fishing opportunities for more high school students across North America than anyone else,” said TBF President Robert Cartlidge. “Together TBF and FLW are laying the foundation on which our sport will continue to build, and we look forward to another incredible season working with schools from New York to California and into Canada to provide unprecedented opportunities for students and their families.”
We are so excited that we proposed a Walleye tournament to TBF this past summer. They said they would try to put one on the schedule this year and here it is! So awesome!
MN Fishing Challenge Host Al Lindner knows catching fish during a tournament is important. He also knows that participants in the annual MN Fishing Challenge, June 4, are fishing to save lives. “This is a fun event; contestants catch fish on Gull Lake near Brainerd while raising funds for people facing alcohol and drug addictions,” Lindner said, “I know we can make a difference for boys, girls, men, women, and their families by raising funds for MN Adult and Teen Challenge.” The MN Fishing Challenge, presented by Mills Fleet Farm, offers many opportunities for anglers to succeed. The team entry fee is $100. Divisions are Lindner Media bass, Navillus walleye, Nor-Son pike, Nor-Son panfish, and Sportech mixed-bag. Sea Foam recognizes10 teams with their Second Chance award. Bag limits are 3 each: bass, walleye and panfish and 1 pike. Mixed-bag is one of each. The AquaVu Early Bird prizes for teams entered by April 8 include a Pasha Lake Camp deluxe fishing adventure in Ontario, five AquaVu underwater viewing systems, a fishing trip with Steve Pennaz, host of Lake Commando TV and lodging at Sandy Beach Resort on Gull Lake. The top 10 teams in each division win great merchandise prizes, including US and Canada resort stays, rods, reels, tackle, trolling motors, ice shelters, guided fishing trips and much more. Flatline Outdoors will award five Mathews bows (by draw) to students in middle and high school. Other prizes include fishing trips with Al and Ron Lindner, Walleye Dan, and other top anglers. Details are posted at mntc.org/events/fishingchallenge along with rules, photos, videos and an entry blank. To support a favorite team with online giving, go to givehope.mntc.org/fish. 127 teams fished Gull Lake during the 9th Annual MN Fishing Challenge, a multi-species fishing tournament, June 3. The 2-person teams found most fish shallow, and almost every team caught fish on Gull Lake near Brainerd. The teams raised nearly $300,000 to support Mn Adult & Teen Challenge drug and rehabilitation programs statewide. Save the date for the 2018 MN Fishing Challenge | June 2, 2018
